#APJAbdulkalam: A tribute to a true Patriot, a Legend

Today is 27th of July. A date marked with a sad memory of the departure of Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Kalam (Dr. APJ Kalam) #APJAbdulKalam.

Born 15 October 1931. He held the post of the President of India from 2002 to 2007. But he is primarily known as the “Missile Man of India”. He had served India for 6 decades in various roles. Always working for the betterment of India he has achieved numerous milestones.

His initial role was that of a Scientist. He started his career in 1960 by joining the Aeronautical Development Establishment under DRDO. Following his dreams he helped India not just in Defence research but also in Civilian research programs. He was associated with the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He helped develop indigenous missile technology for India including the Agni missile thus gaining the title of the ‘Missile Man of India’. He also played a very big and vital role for the Pokhran-II nuclear test which shook the whole world.

Dr. Kalam also has to his credit the successful development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and SLV-III.

His next role was that of a Politician but I would say that was his secondary role. His primary role still remained that of a Scientist as his blood carried extra molecules called ‘love for science’. He became the 11th President of India in 2002. For the first time I could remember a person getting unanimous support from all political parties to be the president.

He also played another vital role during his entire life and that was in shaping India’s future generations. He was a scientist by heart and always supported education. During his tenure as a scientist and as the President you could actually see he was always giving back to the society. He used to actively inspire the younger generations by his speeches. Whenever he visited an educational institution for a lecture one could feel his passion by just hearing him speak. Not just universities he used to visit schools as well to promote young mind seeking directions in life.

He also has a unique credit to him. He visited Switzerland on May 26 in 2005. To honor his visit Swiss government declared May 26 as ‘Science Day’, truly a rare honor.

He received many awards during his life time. The prominent ones were Padma Bhushan in 1981, Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and Bharat Ratna in 1997.

Even his death came while doing the work he loved that is inspiring future generation. He collapsed while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong due to Cardiac Arrest on 27 July 2015 at the age of 83. Serving India until his last breath.

Today on his first Death Anniversary I would like to pay my respects once again to the great man who shaped India’s future, a true Patriot, a Legend Dr. APJ Kalam.

If he gets to read this in Heaven I would like to tell him that we miss him. Though we might want him back but I am sure he is in a place he deserves.
