BLOGGING IS NOT EASY AS MANY PROS CLAIM IT TO BE!
Blogging is not easy as many pros claim it to be!
People who have found success have different views on how you can actually start and build a successful blog. You will find many articles on the web showing you the way to be a successful blogger. Some website also offers what they call ‘Killer Tactics’ or ‘Top 10 ways’ or use some other fancy words to make the blog successful in a short period. Some websites offer you Search Engine Optimization services (SEO) where they claim to make your blog search engine optimized to better index them in top web search sites like Google, Bing etc. Some websites claims to increase the traffic on your blog site from 0 to 100,000 in matter of months.
So many claims and so many people showing you the ways, it will only lead to your own downfall. Trust me!
I started blogging in 2012 with the help of WordPress.com a website offering free service to bloggers. I started getting decent traffic, got a few good comments and likes for my articles. This made me happy. I discussed it with my friends. One of them told me I can do better with my blog than what I was doing. So I started researching on how I can increase my traffic from what I was getting. It lead me from one website to another. My excitement grew uncontrollably as the world shown to me was much bigger and better. The summary of the claims were blogging is easy, content is king, you need SEO to drive more traffic, social media presence is a must. Then my excitement went up several notches when I came to know I can monetize my blog and earn money. I spent 1 whole month on all my research forgetting that I started my blog as a hobby and neglected it completely.
I had written about 15 articles on which I got decent traffic and majority of the traffic was from outside my country. I wrote for 2 months and then suddenly stopped due to my excessive research for about a month. When I came back after I thought I had gained insights into the broad world I found my traffic had died. No one commented anymore. The ones who had subscribed once had left. This was all due to my negligence and over research on topics which I could not control.
I realized one more thing, the major cause, I had stopped writing. I got diverted from my original goal of sharing my thoughts. The situation was similar to how kids get attracted to shiny objects, scissors, knives even though it is dangerous. But unaware of the dangers kids still try to grab those dangerous objects. I did to and I got hurt. I went in a bit of depression as to why my blog was hit badly while others were doing great.
Then I calmed myself down and stopped writing. But not due of my depression but because this time I wanted to do it right. I did no further research except for those which were necessary. I chalked out my plan and waited. Actually I was forced to wait due to my job. It was hectic and I could not get any chance to start again. But my enthusiasm was still alive. Infact it was growing by the minute.
Then a day came in my life when I had to change my job and suddenly I had time I wanted to dedicate to my writing. I was determined that this time I will be focused and so I made a checklist. Nothing fancy but last time I used a free service for my blog of WordPress but this time I wanted my very own website. So my check list was as below.
- Have 5 articles ready to be published
- Think of a good name for the blog
- Purchase Domain
- Purchase Hosting
- Use WordPress.org for getting my site live
- Go live and just focus on writing
This is a simple list but I recommend to people to make a simple list as this one if they are only doing it for hobby or want to share their knowledge. If your aim is to monetize your website or you want to go pro your list will look completely different. Do not think that I am saying it is wrong because I am not. I am only guiding people who want to start blogging as a hobby and not looking for anything grand. But if their content is good nothing can stop them from growing.
So following my check list my blog was up and live on 17th April 2016 and I had 5 blogs rolling. The major difference this time was that I was focused and I simply rejected the shiny world and only focused on my writing. I did hit a bump when I just could not get ideas in my head to write but I had a back-up ready. I invited my friends to share their articles with me. It worked, I got 4articles from my friends and now I am at an average of 3 blogs per week. I think this is good enough for now for a new beginning.
It does not mean that I do not want to monetize my blog or become a content writer and full time blogger in future. It just means I want to do it on my terms. I want to be recognized as a blogger first and want people to like what I write. My mind is still that of a kid though but now that of a focused kid. I write on various topics like Fiction, Management, Medical, Cooking and General Life. I just hope people love my writing because that is for what I am writing.
I would like to ‘Thank’ to all those who have helped me restart my blog especially setting it up. Setting up your own website is not easy. There is a little technical know-how required. This was taken care by my earlier research and with the help of my friends.
I also want to thank the people who have read my articles so far and subscribed to my blog. I request you to share my articles with your friends if you like it.
I will share my experience in later blogs for the starters and the noobs of the blogging world in how to start your blog and promote it without being overwhelmed by the vastness of the blogging world.
