Must Have Golden Rules of Life.

‘Life is too short to make all the mistakes yourself and learn from it’ – ‘Top 5 Golden Rules of My Life’, Original Author ‘I forgot’.

It is true and I know many people who will agree with me. Learning from the mistakes is a must but life is too short to commit all the mistakes in the world and learn from it. This is actually one of my ‘Top 5 Golden Rules of Life’ and I urge all who read this to make it one of your too if you have a list. If you do not have such a list it is about time you make one. These are not just rules; they are a way of life that defines you.

Coming back from the philosophical realm I would say this has relevance everywhere be it personal life or business. When you are a professional a chance of error you get is very less and next to none. You are not allowed to fail; Infact one failure sometimes can cost you your job whether you are a simple clerk or the CEO of a major business power house.

There are several ways you can avoid committing a mistake or take precautions against making a mistake.

  1. Learn from others mistake.
  2. Check, Check and re-check.
  3. Access all possible routes.

1. Learn from others mistake:

This is an important part of my life rule mentioned above. Before going into any projects I speak with people who have handled similar projects. They can give you valuable insights as to how to prepare for it or the possible angles you can utilize to your benefits.

But this is conditional as not always you will have people who have experienced the issue you are currently handling or they might be not close enough to you to help you out.

I personally faced this issue. I was however able to counter it by proactively making new contacts. I reached 100s or people to make only 10 or so contacts. Out of those whom I made contact with only 2-3 turned out to be a valuable professional relationship. I know the success rate is very low and intimidating but ‘Rome was not build in a day’. I was ignored and even blocked by many in the process. I just count them as their loss and move on. Do not linger on them.

Once you have even 1 person willing to help you take all you can from him, utilize it to max and prepare a solid project.

Note: It is a give and take relationship. Be ethical in sharing. Do not be greedy.

2. Check, Check and re-check:

If you have anyone to help or if you do not have any one, this step is not one to miss. Check all requirements however small it may be because you might not succeed if you miss even a small point.

E.g.

If you are applying for a tender make sure all documents are submitted. Price quoted is the best possible you can offer. Do not be greedy to earn more profit and do not give away too much that it might negatively affect you.

Or

You exclude an optional document and someone might not and it can be your loss.

3. Access all possible routes:

Another way to succeed is to access all possible routes. This is especially in case where you do not have anyone to bank on. If you do then he might be able to guide you for ways you did not even imagine.

E.g.

While going for any deals make sure to meet all relevant decision makers (primary or secondary) and the influencers.  I market diagnostic products. Whenever I go to sell one of my products with my sales team I make sure to meet the primary decision maker (Owner of institution or clinic or the HOD) & then meet the secondary decision maker. Now there are 2 key influencers who are often missed by many people be it new comers or old timers. Those 2 are the ‘Purchase Manager’ and ‘Laboratory assistant’.

Now you will think why they are important when the purchase yes or no depends on the decision maker? (To know more in detail about it tune in for my next article)

But the important part is to connect with everyone in the institution to make your process progress faster and safer.

These are a few ways you can make sure you succeed without committing a mistake. People may forget 1 or 2 minor mistakes but if the cost is too great it can come back to bite you in the ass. Believe me I have several marks to prove my points.

If you think you have any more points to add in this I would love to hear from you. It can help me to add more arsenals to my armory and others. And you never know probably we can help each other out in difficult situations by sharing our mistakes and counters for it. If none of us have a counter probably we can brain storm.

Waiting eagerly to hear from you.
